CHENNAI: Former MP and founder leader of the Puthiya Needhi Katchi (PNK) A C Shanmugam hopes that a new dawn would beckon his party with a fresh name and a new flag after an entire decade of lull since the party’s inception.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the general council meet of PNK here on Sunday, Shanmugam said his party would be known as the Needhi Katchi or the Justice Party from now on. The colour mix of the party’s flag has been changed. Now it shall have black, orange, yellow and red.

Asked what prompted the leadership to go in for the change, the PNK leader said the idea was to give a new ‘impetus’ to party workers.

The party, at the time of its founding 10 years ago had 50 lakh members, he claimed and deplored that the number had now fallen to ‘just 10 lakh.’

When asked what led to the erosion in the party’s support base, Shanmugam said the reasons were many and that it would be difficult analysing them now.

Many felt that the Justice Party would be a ‘better name’ given its great past and hence it was unanimously decided at the general council meet to change the name to Needhi Katchi or the Justice Party. The Election Commission would be petitioned to recognise the name change.

The colours in party’s flag will be changed as DMDK too used similar colours in its flags and in other promotional material.

On September 15, to commemorate Anna’s birth centenary besides 10 years of the party’s founding, a rally would be taken out in Chennai from Monroe statue to Anna statue.

On September 25, ‘Mupperum Vizha’ will be celebrated throughout the State by party cadre to mark the birth anniversary of freedom fighter VO Chidambaranar and completion of the birth centenary of Aringnar Anna besides observing 10 years of the party’s founding, a rally would be taken out in Chennai from Monroe statue to Anna statue.
