THANJAVUR: A three-member Central team on Sunday visited various areas in the district affected by monsoon since last month and made an on-the-spot assessment of damages and loss caused due to heavy floods.

The team, headed by L Viswanathan, joint secretary, Union home ministry, visited Aresuthipattu, Vadapathi, Arulmalaikottai, Arunthavapuram, Puliayakudi, Puthur, Mukkudai and Arasapattu villages. Farmers showed them decayed crops.

At Kulamangalam in Orathanadu taluk, farmers informed that tapioca crop was fully damaged apart from paddy.

The team also held discussions with officials, farmers and other affected people to assess the exact loss.  

The damages due to recent floods in the district had been estimated at Rs 129 crore.

Paddy in 27,695 ha, sugarcane in 480 ha, and other crops in 137 ha were fully damaged and roads for a length of 500 km needed relaying, District Collector M S Shanmugam informed the Central team.

Later speaking to newspersons at Vadapathi, Viswanathan said the team would submit a report on damages at the earliest.
