COIMBATORE: Talks to find a solution to the ongoing tussle between lawyers and police over the issue of the arrest of a head constable for allegedly assaulting a lawyer, some days ago in the city, ended in failure today.

The lawyers were boycotting court proceedings and taking out a procession and forming human chain in the city, protesting over deletion of 506 (ii) (causing bleeding injuries with weapon) in the FIR against the constable, Muthu Palaniappan, and letting him go free.

As the talks between City Police Commissioner, C Sylendra Babu and the office bearers of Coimbatore Bar Association (CBA) and Coimbatore Criminal Bar Association (CCBA), failed lawyers resorted to the agitation, sources in police department and also bar associations, said. .

Meanwhile, in order to break the impasse, a meeting was convened before District Judge, Bhaskaran and Chief Judicial Magistrate, Srinivasan, in which CBA president, Nandakumar, CCBA president, Balakrishnan and other senior officer bearers, Sylendra Babu and DRO Shanmugasundaram and RDO Mohammed Meeran participated.

However, the talks ended without finding any solution, as both stuck to their stand--with lawyers demanding arrest of the head constable and police for an inquiry by neutral agency, without arresting the constable, sources said.
