PUDUCHERRY: In an election mode speech, Union Home Minister P Chidambaram on Sunday played down the “mistakes” of the Congress government and appealed to the people to look its achievement that reflected on the tremendous development of the area.

“There could have been some mistakes here and there. Even when I go through files, mistakes could happen. If mistakes happen, they can be corrected also. What is more important is that we understand people’s needs and fulfil them as well,” said Chidambaram, after opening a road bridge across Thenpenniyar river at Soriyankuppam bordering Cuddalore district.

He also inaugurated an overhead tank at Vannakulampet and launched supplementary feeding on holidays under Integrated Child Development Scheme.

“What people need is development and that is happening in the Union Territory... For a population of 15 lakh, there are already 778 anganwadis here. No other State can boast of anganwadis in this high a proportion. Based on  a plea from  the Puducherry government, efforts will be made to establish another 100 anganwadis,” Chidambaram said.

Referring to Union Minister V Narayanasamy’s speech, he said `3,200 crore have been allocated for Puducherry, which will pave way for more spending on roads, water, electricity and other infrastructure facilities.

In a bid to play down any chance of formation of a non-Congress government, Chidambaram said, “Who is the chief minister is important. But, to which party the chief minister belongs is more important,” he said.
