As per the orders of Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, mobile sprinkler irrigation system has been launched in Nagapattinam district to save the samba crops from withering. Speaking to reporters after inspecting the sprinkler system in action at Pazhaiyanur village near Sikkal, Collector T Munusamy said that a total of 140 mobile sprinklers have been brought to the district and over 20 agricultural officers have been put in-charge.
Water is brought through tanker lorries and mobile sprinklers, connected to a pipeline from tankers are taken through paddy fields for irrigation. This type of irrigation serves entire soil surface as water breaks up into small water droplets.
In addition, 80 boom sprayers have been brought to the district, which would spray chemicals to make the paddy crops drought-resistant.
Farmers could contact the agriculture officers of the respective areas and avail the benefit of sprinklers, said the collector.Due to non-availability of water for irrigation, crops have started withering.
