CHENNAI: In the aftermath of Thane, the Opposition is duty bound to cooperate with the State while undertaking relief measures, opined DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi here on Friday after returning to the city after his two-day visit to the cyclone affected areas.

Talking to reporters, he said that his visit consoled the cyclone affected people and vice-versa.

On whether the State’s relief was satisfactory, Karunanidhi said that he felt that the Opposition should cooperate with the State during relief work.

“I think I have executed that duty to my satisfaction in this regard,” he said and added, “Even some private service-oriented organisations are extending help to Thane affected people complementing the State. Such relief measures should continue.”

Asked whether it was right on the part of Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa to tour the Thane devastated areas in a choppper, the DMK chief maintained that he did not want to respond to such unnecessary questions.

On celebrating Tamil New Year, the leader said that only Tamils can decide as to when to celebrate New Year. “Last year, we celebrated during Thai and we will continue to do the same,” he said.
