Ryots stand up against GAIL project

Express News Service

TN Farmers Livelihood Protection Committee has sought the Chief Minister’s intervention to protect the interest of farmers who will be affected by the Gas Authority of India Ltd’s (GAIL) gas pipeline project.  In a letter to J Jayalalithaa, committee (Tamizhga Vivasayegal Valvathara Pathugapu Kuzhu) president P R Natarajan and coordinator G K Nagaraj elaborated on GAIL’s project. As part of its project linking Kochi and Bangalore, the company has started its preliminary works in western regions including Coimbatore and Krishnagiri. “The GAIL plans to lay 2 feet radius pipeline and took control of 65 feet of land. They have asked farmers to remove buildings, trees, wells and borewells from the land. Those who own one or two acres of land were mostly affected. If 65 feet of area was taken across the land, then its value will go down and the farmer will lose his livelihood,” they claimed.
