Huge parcel of electronic items hurled into Kovai jail

Busting a major racket in the Coimbatore Central Prison, the jail authorities have reportedly seized a huge parcel containing large number of electronic items and drugs from the high security block on Monday.

The parcel was found on the terrace of the high security block and it contained around 27 cell phones, a mini-CD player and around 350 CDs among other items, sources said and added that this was one of the biggest haul of illegal items from the prison in recent years.

“At Around 6.30 am, one of the prison warders noticed a huge parcel being flung across the compound wall close to the place where the gallows are located. Before he could seize the parcel, one of the prisoners picked it up and fled the spot,” another source said.

Soon, the warder informed about the incident to his higher officers and an intensive search was conducted on the prison premises. Hours later, the parcel was found abandoned on the terrace by the search party.

According to sources, the parcel contained as many as 27 cell phones, four cell phone batteries, four cell phone chargers, 24 earphones, 14 cigarette packs, 191 beedi packs, 18 gutkha bundles, one torch, one set of playing cards, one Compact disc player and 351 Compact discs.

The Coimbatore jail authorities are further investigating and are expected to file a police complaint on Tuesday.
