The Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam (PDK) on Wednesday appealed to a private transport operator in Coimbatore to remove bus destination boards in Hindi (Devanagiri script) immediately. If the transport operator fails to comply by July 2, activists of the PDK would be forced to blackout the Hindi destination boards/stickers, the general secretary K Ramakrishnan warned .
Through a report ‘City Bus Takes the Hindi Route!’ published, on Wednesday, Express had highlighted how the move to display destinations in Hindi alongside those in Tamil and English on Bus Route No 19G in Kovai was making life easier for migrant workers from Bihar, Odisha and UP. The bus operated by RVS SVJ Transports plies between Ukkadam and Vellalore.
He argued that as early as 1967 the then CM and DMK founder C N Annadurai had passed a resolution in the Assembly stating that no language other than Tamil and English could be used (in public places/Government sector) in the State.
