Fake liquor unit busted, 7 arrested

IMFL labels seized; kingpin on the run in UT

An illegal liquor manufacturing unit was busted at Marimalai Nagar in Velrampet and seven people were arrested here on Wednesday. The operation was carried out jointly by the Mudaliarpet Police and Excise Department.

Officials from the Excise Department seized 25 cases of bottles from the thatched hut at a construction site where the fake liquor was being manufactured. Each case contained 48 filled bottles of 180 ml each. They also seized arrack essence, empty bottles and fake IMFL lables worth Rs 4 lakh from the hut. A van believed to be used for transporting the liquor was also seized.

The joint operation was planned by the police personnel and officials from the Excise Department following a tip-off on Tuesday night. They surrounded the thatched hut in which illicit liquor was being manufactured and nabbed seven people.

The official added that the arrested persons, Murugan, Selvam, Ashok Kumar, Iyyanar, Ravi, Jinnah and Chinnadurai belonged to Pudupalayam in Cuddalore district of Tamil Nadu.

They had “orders” to make 50 cases of ‘Day and Night Brandy’ which were to be sold in Tamil Nadu, the official said, adding that, Baalu, kingpin of the racket who hails from Bahour, was still at large.
