Prisoner escapes, jailor suspended

A prisoner managed to escape from the sub-jail here on Monday and was re-arrested the same evening. Following the incident, the sub-jail superintendent was placed under suspension while four other staff members were transferred.

Sathish (31) of Vadalur was arrested and lodged in the sub-jail on October 21 on charges of attacking his father with sharp weapon following a dispute.

On Monday evening, the sub-jail staff were shocked to notice that Sathish was missing. On information, Superintendent of Cuddalore Central Prison Shanmuga Sundaram rushed to the spot and conducted inquiries. Investigations revealed that Sathish had escaped by climbing the compound wall. Superintendent of the sub-jail Pandiyan then lodged a complaint with the New Town police station. Sathish was caught in Vadalur and sent to the Cuddalore Central Prison.

Meanwhile, Pandiyan was placed under suspension for dereliction of duty while four other staff members Mani, Sampath Kumar, Babu Sahib and Akbar Muhammed were transferred to sub-jails in Gingee and Thirukovilur.
