A 23-year-old inmate of the Vellore Central Prison for Men attempted suicide by inflicting self injuries on his chest on Thursday.
Prison officials said, Karuppu Nagoor, a resident of Chennai, was a remand prisoner in a murder case. His father Sheikh Ahamed had died a week ago. Nagoor had gone to his house after a court direction for the final rites of his father. After returning, Nagoor was depressed over his father’s sudden death. He inflicted self injuries on his chest using a weapon. The prison officials rushed him to the prison hospital and provided him first aid.
The Jailor lodged a complaint with the Bagayam police. A case was registered.
