Family members of Karaikal acid attack victim Vinodhini have welcomed the verdict in the case, saying it would bring peace to the departed soul and to them as well.
Reacting to the judgment, Ramesh, a relative, told Express, “We are pleased with the judgment as it will finally bring peace to her (Vinodhini) and also to our grieving family. Similarly, investigation into all pending acid attack cases should be expedited. Only timely justice can console a grieving family.”
The family was all praise for the Puducherry Government and to the judiciary and police department in Karaikal. “Such gruesome attacks on women should never get repeated and we believe that Vinodhini’s case will set the stage for speedy trials and justice,” he added.
Additional public prosecutor Vetriselvan said, “Though we expected capital punishment for the accused, we are happy with the manner and pace in which way the case progressed. Even a fast track court would not have settled the case in such a short period.” Fifteen sittings were completed in the case before the pronouncement of judgment and a total of 24 witnesses were cross-examined. “We believe that this case will bring about proper regulation in sale of acids,” he added.
According to police sources, the convict Suresh Kumar had purchased the nitric acid used in the attack from an acid dealer Muthukumaraswamy who supplies chemcals to schools and colleges for educational purposes.
It is said that the convict had purchased the acid for `200 on November 12, 2012, two days prior to the attack, claiming that he wanted it for destroying unwanted plants in his backyard.

Jayabalan and Saraswathi, parents of Karaikal acid attack victim Vinodhini met Chief Minister N Rangasamy (in pic) here on Tuesday evening and said that if the government decides to go on appeal for enhancing the punishment, they would extend all support for it.
Jayabalan said he never expected that the judgement would be delivered early. He added that he was satisfied with the judgement.
