No Violation of Poll Code in Yercaud: CM

Jayalalithaa says she did not announce new schemes during her campaign; Tamil speech not correctly reflected in English version

Express News Service

Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Tuesday denied any violation of model code of conduct during her campaign in Yercaud Assembly constituency, on November 28.

Jayalalithaa said she had not announced new schemes during her campaign and her speech in Tamil was not correctly reflected in English translation.

Replying to the notice sent by the Election Commission on December 2, the Chief Minister said in her speech delivered on November 28, she had only referred to various developmental schemes already implemented and under implementation in the State after she assumed charge as Chief Minister of the State for the third time.

“I made a general statement that whatever is required for the uplift of the people in the area would be provided. It would not be correct to link the unrelated general statement with the requirements which were brought to my notice,” the Chief Minister said.

The Chief Minister also clarified that she had not announced any financial grant in any form, or promise thereof, and did not make promise of construction of roads and provision of drinking water facilities in violation of the model code of conduct in force for the December 4 bypoll.

Stating that presumably, the DMK had lodged the complaint against her, the Chief Minister said “there is no basis for coming to such a conclusion in the fourth para of the notice (making promises to the electorate of poll-bound constituency) and that too by making a conjunctive reference, which is mere surmise and suspicion and which is inadmissible in law, more so in the case of interpreting the model of conduct.”

Name Misspelt

Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa has objected to misspelling of her name by the Election Commission in the communication sent on the alleged model code violation during her campaign in Yercaud Assembly constituency.

In her reply to the Election Commission sent on December 2, the Chief Minister brought to the notice of the Chief Election Commissioner that her name has been misspelt in the communication sent to her.

The Election Commission’s letter dated December 2 has been addressed to Ms J Jayalalitha, Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu State, Chennai (TN).

The AIADMK chief has added an ‘a’ to her name many years ago and since then, her name has been written as ‘Jayalalithaa’.

Give AIADMK Resounding win, says CPM

Chennai: A day before Yercaud bypoll, the CPM has thrown its weight behind the AIADMK. A statement from CPM state secretary G Ramakrishnan on Tuesday urged voters to give a resounding victory to the ruling party stating “the DMK even after pulling out of the government, has firmly supported anti-people policies like the Food Security Bill and Pension Bill among others.” “At the same time, the AIADMK has been critical of the UPA’s anti-people policies and has opposed every attempt by the Centre to infringe upon the rights of states. The AIADMK has also implemented a number of schemes for the poor sections of society,” the statement said.
