Trains back on track on Pamban Bridge

Express News Service

A week after a barge rammed the Pamban railway bridge, bringing rail traffic on the route to a standstill, the Southern Railway announced restoration of rail services on the section on Sunday.

For the first time in a week, a day train between Madurai and Rameswaram was operated on Sunday.

Under the supervision of A K Rastogi, Divisional Railway Manager (DRM), Madurai, M Satheesh, Principal Chief Engineer, Southern Railways, Chennai and Lalloo Singh, Chief Bridge Engineer, Southern Railways, Chennai, restoration work on the damaged bridge was undertaken by a team of engineers from Madurai and Chennai divisions.  After ensuring that the track and rail bridge were fit for transportation, normal day train services between Mandapam and Rameswaram  resumed on Sunday.

Due to the presence of the private tug boat anchored at Palk Bay, night train services over the bridge would be suspended till Monday.
