Retrenched workers granted bail, but to remain in prison

A local court on Thursday granted conditional bail to the 186 retrenched workers remanded to judicial custody and lodged in Kalapet Central jail three days ago.

When their bail plea came up for hearing, Judicial Magistrate II Uthamraja granted them conditional bail on a bond of Rs 5,000 and one surety for all the 186 workers. They were told to sign the register at the police station at 10 am daily.

Even though they got bail in this case, they have to remain in jail till the court decides on the bail application moved in the cases registered against them at the Odiansalai police station.

It may be recalled that two separate cases have been filed against the retrenched workers, at Kalapet and Odiansalai police stations.

Cases have been registered against them under section 147 (rioting), 283 (obstruction in public way), 353 (assault on public servant while on duty), 332 (voluntary causing hurt to public servant) of the IPC and read with section 149 (unlawful assembly) and section 3 of the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act.
