No bail for accused in NTK man killing

Express News Service

Observing that courts should exercise caution in granting bail to the accused in serious criminal offences, the Madras High Court (Madurai Bench) on Tuesday cancelled the bail granted to the prime accused in the murder of Naam Tamilar Katchi state organiser Suba Muthukumar.

Dismissing a bail petition filed by the accused Gopal alias Gopalakrishnan, Justice N Kirubakaran said merely because the charge-sheet is filed in a case, it will not automatically entitle an accused to obtain bail.

Stating that “the case proves how the people who take to crime as a way of life are a threat to the safety andsecurity of the people,” the judge said “a person like the petitioner, who has as many as 17 cases filed against him, cannot be enlarged on bail. It may not be in the interest of the society to release him on bail.”

Muthukumar was murdered by a gang in Pudukottai in February 2011. The case was investigated by the CB-CID.
