Key witness in Radhakrishnan assault case deposes The son of the slain Varadarajaperumal temple manager Sankararaman, on Monday, deposed before a sessions judge in a case relating to the assault of Mandaveli S Radhakrishnan in which the Kanchi Sankaracharya Jayendra Saraswati is an accused.
Radhakrishnan and his wife were attacked in September 2002 by a gang. He then accused the Kanchi seer, Jayendra Saraswati, of instigating the attack owing to his criticism of the Kanchi mutt’s functioning. The Foreshore Estate police had registered a case and the trial commenced in February 2011.
On Monday, Anand Sharma, son of the slain Kanchi temple manager Sankararaman, in whose case too the Kanchi seer is an accused, deposed before a sessions court here and said that Radhakrishnan was attacked as the mutt high command, at first, thought it was he and not Sankararaman who had written letters to authorities about irregularities in the mutt’s administration. Anand said his father had written letters to several persons in the mutt as well under the name Somasekara Ganapadigal, elaborating on alleged irregularities in the functioning of the Sankaracharyas. Following the deposition, the matter was adjourned to October 22.
