Survey reveals high death rate in Nilgiris district

In the wake of deaths due to pregnancy related complications, village health workers and primary health centre nurses have been asked to create awareness about precautions to be taken by women during pregnancy, Health department officials here said.

According to the officials, a survey has revealed that those who became pregnant after 35 developed more complications and the death rate due to complications during pregnancy and delivery was three times more than women of lesser age.

The death rate in Niligiris district was the maximum with 226 deaths due to pregnancy related complications, followed by Perambalur 37; Villipuram 130; Tiruchirappalli 127; and Tiruvannamalai,126, they said, quoting the survey.

The survey said 1100 women died due to pregnancy related problems including delivery of child in Tamil Nadu, which was one per cent of the Nation's total mortality due to complications during maternity period.
