A group of thieves, who had stolen a temple kalasam about five months ago from a village near Thittakudi, have returned it with an apology letter.
According to common belief among villagers of Edasithur, the 3.5 feet kalasam of Adhikesavaperumal temple contains the element iridium, which is apparently worth several lakhs of rupees.
On April 8, the kalasam was stolen by some unidentified persons. Registering a case, Mangalampettai police launched a hunt for the culprits.
Meanwhile, on Saturday, the kalasam was found near a private school on Perumulai Road in Thittakudi. An apology letter was also found near the kalasam. In the letter, the thieves begged pardon for their misconduct and ‘requested’ God and the residents of Edasithur to forgive them. The letter claimed, “From the time we stole the kalasam from the temple, we were confronted with a series of problems. We believe all of this was because of the kalasam, which is very powerful. Hence, we have decided to return it.” “No one should dare repeat this mistake,” the letter warned.
Thittakudi police inspector Chidambaram Murugesan recovered the kalasam and the letter and handed it over to the Mangalampettai police, who have jurisdiction over Edasithur. Mangalampettai police SI Eswari began a probe.
