Express News Service

THANJAVUR: Five stone idols from a 1,300-year-old temple belonging to the Aditya Chola era located near Kumbakonam were found stolen on Monday morning.

Police said that the incident came to light when Kaliyaperumal (70), watchman of the Brahma Nandeeswarar temple, on Monday morning found that two Brahma idols, two Sandegeswarar idols and a Bairavar idol installed in temple premises were missing.

Kaliyaperumal then alerted the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment department officials at the Patteswaram Durgai Amman temple.

Officials said the height of the idols varied from two feet to four feet.

On information, Patteswaram police reached the spot and conducted inquiries. Police suspect the idols might have been shifted using a four-wheeler as tyre marks were found inside the temple.
