VILLUPURAM:  A 28-year-old youth attempted to commit suicide at the Villupuram District Court premises on Saturday evening, alleging he was tired of fighting tuberculosis and poverty for the past three years.

Police said, Raja, son of Samuel was a resident of Singarathoppu in Villupuram town. He was working as a cleaner in a private lorry transport agency, and was diagnosed with tuberculosis three years ago.

Later he voluntarily left his family and was making ends meet by working in a mechanic shop on Tiruchy main road. Raja had approached the taluk police on Saturday asking them to arrest him and give him food as he had not eaten for three days. The police refused to do so. As a desperate measure, Raja went to Villupuram District Court premises and attempted to hang himself on a ladder. Passersby stopped him from doing so and informed the taluk police who detained him, fed him, counselled him and later released him.
