Counsel woman Bootlegger, Inspector Told

MADURAI: Giving an opportunity to a woman bootlegger to reform, the Madras High Court (Madurai Bench) has directed the Kumbakonam Taluk Police Inspector to arrange counselling for her.

The woman, Mariammal, a resident of Kumbakonam, who has over 10 criminal cases pending against her, had moved the court under Section 482 of the Code of Criminal Procedure seeking a direction to the local police not to harass her and instead treat her in accordance with law.

 Justice Akbar Ali said: “In any event, for giving an opportunity to her (petitioner) to reform herself, the Inspector of Police, Kumbakonam Taluk Police Station is directed to arrange for counseling (for her).”
