SRIVILLIPUTHUR: A 14-year-old girl who immolated herself last week after she had been allegedly sexually assaulted by her former school teacher in T Krishnapuram village in Virudhunagar district succumbed to burn injuries at the Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH) in Madurai on Wednesday.

Jothi (name changed), who sustained 90 percent burn injuries, was admitted at GRH on May 31 and died at the hospital on Wednesday morning, police said.

Chandrasekar had worked as a trainee teacher at Panchayat Union Middle School in Thambipatti last year. When he was teaching 8th grade students, he allegedly misbehaved with Jothi. As Chandrasekar continued to harass Jothi, she informed her parents, who took up the issue with the school authorities. Though he was dismissed, he continued to follow her, said the victim’s father Sadayandi. On May 31 Chandrasekar abducted Jothi and forcefully took her to a public toilet, police said. However, she managed to escape, but later immolated herself. After police received a confession statement from Jothi, they booked Chandrasekar under Section VIII of the Protection of Children From Sexual Offences Act and remanded him in judicial custody.
