PUDUKKOTTAI: A police head constable and his brother were booked under charges of conspiring to ignite about 25 thatched huts in the wee hours of Monday, following a land dispute prevailing between them.

Sources said that a case had been registered at Ganesh Nagar police station against P Gunasekaran, son of Palani, who is working as the head constable in the same station.

His brother Murugesan and four others were also booked under charges of conspiring and putting  the thatched huts of Udayanary colony on fire, so as to force the occupants to vacate the place immediately.

Based on the complaint lodged by the victims, Ganesh Nagar police began investigations and registered a case against the accused under various sections including IPC 436 and 507.

According to police sources, the head constable Gunasekaran had a piece of land in Udayaneri colony. However, some other people from the same area also started claiming rights on the same property. To ascertain ownership of the land, all of them filed various cases in the Madurai bench of Madras high court.

However, initial inquiry revealed that Gunasekarn had also hired some goons to set fire on the thatched sheds. The Collector C Manoharan has already ordered an inquiry on the issue to be conducted by revenue authorities and a report on the same would be tabled to him by Monday.
