Colombo Music Fest Called Off After Protests

Express News Service

A music fest that was to have been held this weekend featuring prominent participants and past participants of Vijay TV’s Super Singer show, has reportedly been cancelled, following protests of pro-Eelam groups. MDMK leader Vaiko issued a statement that media reports from Lanka said that the programme stood cancelled, following their protests.

Believed to be organised by Coral Property development and Ceylon Arts Creations, the show was set to be staged in Colombo at two venues when director Gauthaman first objected to it, on Thursday, calling it “profiteering on the blood and loss of innocent Tamils”.

As Vijay TV is widely associated with the Super Singer franchise, Vaiko and other film directors who are sympathetic to the Eelam cause condemned the channel for their “insensitive move to hold such a show”, especially when the UNHRC report on war crimes was due. On Friday, Vijay TV issued a statement that it had no connection with the event and condemned the use of their brand name and the Super Singer tag for the stage show.
