6 Die as SUV Rams Stationary Truck

In a gruesome road accident, six persons including a woman were killed and four others injured, when an SUV in which they were travelling rammed the rear of a stationary lorry at Thuvarankuruchi near here, during the wee hours of Monday.

According to police, Sellamuthu (58) of Velmurugan Puvanam village near Villathikulam in Tuticorin district was returning from Vellore with wife S Kasthuri (51), son S Muthuvinayagam (18), after pursuing a marriage proposal of his daughter.

Their relatives Subramani (48), Subaiah (60), Balu (29), Arumugam (26) and Karuppasamy (45) were also with them.

They had started their travel from Vellore on Sunday night in a sports utility vehicle (SUV). Nataraj (29) of Soosanur, Tuticorin district, was driving.

 When the vehicle was approaching Soriyampatti Vilakku near Thuvarankuruchi in Tiruchy district on the Tiruchy-Madurai national highway, it rammed into the rear of a stationary lorry.

The lorry which was heading to Madurai with a load of concrete powder from Andhra Pradesh, was parked on the roadside after it developed a snag, police said.

Car driver Nataraj, Karuppasamy, Arumugam, Subramani and Kasthuri died on the spot. The remaining five who were trapped inside the car were grievously injured.

On information, Valanadu police and personnel from the fire and rescue operations team rushed to the spot and rescued the injured persons, and sent them to the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital in Tiruchy.

However, Subaiah died at the hospital. Others are receiving treatment in the hospital, police said.

Valanadu police have registered a case. Further investigation is on.
