Express News Service

CHIDAMBARAM:  VCK chief Thol Thirumavalavan, who had won in the Chidambaram Parliamentary constituency in the 2009 elections, however, failed to earn a second successive term in this constituency.

Thirumavalan, who got 3,01,041 votes, lost to the AIADMK candidate M Chandrakasi by a huge margin of 1,28,495 votes. PMK’s Sudha Maniratnam settled for third place with 2,79,015 votes while the Congress candidate Vallalperuman secured only 28,988 votes. As many as 12,138 people had opted for NOTA. Though a majority of the voters here belongs to the Dalit and Vanniyar community, it failed to bag a win for either the PMK or VCK.

Thirumavalavan who got 4,28,804 votes in the 2009 elections could garner only 3,01,041 this time. Initially, it was assumed that the constituency would witness a tough three-cornered fight between AIADMK, PMK and VCK.  However, the election results completely turned down the assumptions and predictions, with the ruling party finally emerging victorious by finishing with a tally of 4,29,536 votes.
