MADURAI: Protesting the Supreme Court ban on Jallikattu (taming the bull), a total bandh was observed at nearby Avaniapuram, a major centre for the sport in the state.
Jallikattu is held in the village in a grand manner during the Pongal festival every year.
Breeders of bulls demanded that the Tamil Nadu government file a special petition to remove the ban.
On May 7, the Apex Court had banned using bulls for Jallikattu events or bullock-cart races across the country and hoped Parliament would elevate the rights of animals to that
of constitutional rights.
It also directed governments and Animal Welfare Board of
India to take steps to prevent infliction of unnecessary pain
or suffering on animals, saying all living creatures,
including animals, have inherent dignity and a right to live
peacefully and right to protect their well-being.
