Ashok Kumar is New Tamil Nadu DGP

CHENNAI: Senior IPS official Ashok Kumar, a 1982 batch officer, was on Monday appointed as the new Director General of Police (Law and Order) and head of the police force of Tamil Nadu. He replaces incumbent K Ramanujam, who has been appointed as an advisor to the government for a year.

A DG rank official heading the State intelligence wing since August 1, 2013, Ashok Kumar has been the Joint Director of CBI, the nation’s premier investigation agency, for several years before being repatriated to the State cadre. Hailing from Sonepat in Haryana, Ashok Kumar was born on June 15, 1955, completed his masters in Commerce and earned his M Phil as well.

Fluent in English, Hindi and Tamil, Ashok Kumar was initially posted in the State cadre as assistant SP, Tirumangalam, Madurai. He later served in various capacities as SP, Tiruchy, and Deputy Commissioner (DC), South Chennai, before going to the CBI on deputation.

After repatriation, he was appointed Joint Director, Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption. He went on deputation to CBI again and returned to the State as ADGP. He was then posted as head of the Economic Offences Wing in 2013.

Later, he became the ADGP heading the State Intelligence where he was serving so far. Like his predecessor Ramanujam, Ashok Kumar is expected to be at the helm of the State police for at least two years.

Ramanujam was made advisor for a period of one year or till the need for the post ceases, whichever is earlier.
