CHENNAI: The Railway Protection Force (RPF) at Chennai Central started an awareness campaign ahead of the Deepavali holidays advising passengers against carrying firecrackers on the trains. In addition to pamphlets, a short clip of popular Tamil film actor Vijay Sethupathi urging people against this practice is being beamed at the screens at the terminal station.
"We are regularly inspecting passengers at the station as carrying inflammable items on trains is a serious offence and attracts a fine of Rs 1000 and 3 years Rigorous imprisonment. Last year four persons were arrested for the same," said RPF Chennai Central Inspector N Azhagarsamy. Orders for carrying out strict inspections have come from the Chief Security Commissioner B Mohan.
RPF personnel interacted with passengers at Chennai Central and had models of the sparklers to raise awareness on Saturday at the station.
