Accused Shot Dead After Cop Stabbed

RAMANATHAPURAM: A sub-inspector shot dead a man inside the S P Pattinam police station after the latter allegedly stabbed him with a knife during interrogation, here on Tuesday.

The sub-inspector, Kalidas, sustained injuries on his waist and left hand when Syed Mohamed attacked him with a knife. In retaliation, Kalidas fired three rounds at Mohamed, killing him on the spot. Kalidas was rushed to the Ramanathapuram government hospital, from where he was referred to the Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai.

Explaining the background of the case, sources said that Syed Mohamed was picked up for questioning after he allegedly tried to stab one mechanic Arul when the latter refused to hand him over a bike, which had been given for repair. Arul claimed that Mohamed was drunk at the time of the incident.

Meanwhile, in the night, SI Kalidas returned to the station after rounds and began interrogating Mohamed, who entered into a verbal altercation with the official as well. In a fit of rage, Mohamed picked up the knife that was lying on the SI’s table and  allegedly stabbed him. In retaliation, Kalidas fired three rounds at Mohamed. The S P Pattinam police registered a case and were investigating.
