'Stop Sinking Borewells on Riverbed'

Express News Service

VELLORE: Members of the Vellore District Palar Protection Association has demanded industries and local bodies to stop sinking new borewells in the Palar riverbed and its vicinity and take necessary steps to revive the water flow.

The Association convened an awareness meeting on Sunday to stress the importance and need to protect the source of the groundwater.

Nearly 40 villages located along the riverbed are facing severe water crisis due to over-extraction of ground water from the riverbed. Water level has depleted to 1,000 feet from around 500 feet a year ago and there was no source of recharge and poor rainfall was aggravating the water crisis.
