FIR Skips Dalit Bros Hurt in Melur Clash

MADURAI:  The Madurai district police have registered a case against six inmates for the violence that broke out in the Melur Borstal School on Saturday, which resulted in the injury of at least six inmates and a jail warder.

The prison officials transferred three other inmates out of the Borstal School on Sunday apart from the 12 inmates who were immediately transferred to Thanjavur and Pudukottai Borstal schools on Saturday after the incident.

The six accused, all caste Hindus, have been identified as G Arunpandian (19), P Arunkumar (21), K Surya Prakash (20), S Srinivasa Perumal (19), B Kamalesh (19) and M Marimuthu (21). While Arunpandian and Arunkumar were already accused in a murder case in Teppakulam station, Kamalesh, who allegedly triggered the violence, is an accused in an attempt to murder case in Silaiman police station. Others were accused in robbery cases.

Interestingly, two brothers — T Prabhu Deva (21) and T Arun Manikandan (20) — from Dalit community who were targeted in the attack by the caste Hindus resulting in cut injuries in their bodies have not been included as injured persons in the FIR registered.

Instead, Srinivasa Perumal and Arun Kumar, who are also the accused in the case, have been included as injured along with chief prison warder Santhanam.

According to police sources, the two Dalits, who were arrested for murdering the panchayat president of Chakkimangalam belonging to caste Hindu community were targeted with caste motive.
