Man Dies of Excessive Drinking; VCK, Kin Demand Closure of Arrack Shop

Tension prevailed near the Puducherry-Tamil Nadu border, following a road-roko by the VCK and the relatives of a man.

PUDUCHERRY:Tension prevailed at Muthialpet near the Puducherry-Tamil Nadu border on Friday night, following a road-roko by cadre of the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi and the relatives of a man, who died of  excessive drinking.

The protesters placed the body of the deceased on the road and demanded the immediate closure of the arrack shop.

Sources said 55-year-old Rajaram, a mason, was found dead near the shop. His relatives said he had died after consuming spurious arrack.The stir affected traffic for over an hour. Tahsildar Dayalan and senior police officials held talks with the protestors and assured them of action after consulting  higher officials. Following this, the protestors dispersed.Footboard Travel Kills  A school student Chandru (17), who was travelling on the footboard of a bus, died  while alighting from it at Thirubuvanai on Friday. Police said Chandru was the son of a farmer Govindan of Thirukanur.

 He was returning from school at Kandamangalam, when he fell off the bus and its rear wheel crushed him. He was taken to JIPMER, but he succumbed to injuries in the wee hours of Saturday. Traffic Police have registered a case and are investigating.
