Official Gets 3-yr Jail for Bribery

PUDUCHERRY: The Principal District and Sessions court on Thursday sentenced an official of the Bahour commune panchayat to undergo three years of rigorous imprisonment and pay fine of `20,000 in connection with a bribery case.

According to sources, Mahesh Kumar, a multi-task force worker with the panchayat, lodged a complaint with the vigilance and anti-corruption unit stating that Narayanasamy, then LDC cum executive officer, had demanded bribe of `10,000 for processing his service papers in 2011. Following this, vigilance officials laid a trap and Narayanasamy was caught red handed while accepting the money from Mahesh Kumar on August 23, 2011. He was arrested and was charged under section 7 of Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. The trial was conducted in the Principal District and Sessions court.
