'Include WMDs Disarmament in Curriculum'

Express News Service

COIMBATORE: The UGC has asked universities across the country to include topics like disarmament of weapons of mass destruction (WMDs) and peaceful use of chemistry in their curriculum.

In a letter to vice chancellors, UGC Secretary Jaspal S Sandhu said, “The coverage of topics on important and vital issues such as weapons of mass destruction disarmament, peaceful use of chemistry are grossly inadequate in our curricula at the university level. Young students, who are well conversant and profound in scientific principles, are largely ignorant of important international conventions, like Chemical Weapons Convention, which have a bearing on the welfare of mankind.”

The National Authority Chemical Weapons Convention has decided that education and awareness should be a thrust area to create mass awareness for chemical disarmament, he noted.
