COIMBATORE:Coimbatore Corporation is planning to launch WiFi service at Race Course. The civic body, with the help of a private internet service provider, will launch a trial run of the project.

Mayor P Rajkumar and Corporation Commissioner K Vijayakarthikeyan recently held a final discussion with the service providers. The civic body has roped in Reliance, Bharti Airtel and BluWiFi to provide WiFi services within the city limits.

Reliance will provide the service at Race Course and the Corporation main office, while Bharti Airtel will cover the areas from Corporation main office to Coimbatore railway station. BluWiFi will cover Gandhipuram, Singanallur, Ukkadam bus stand, Mettupalayam Road bus stand and Bharathi Park road.

“We have asked the device to be installed on the streetlight poles. We will implement the project at Race Course on a trial basis. Any one of the three service providers would be selected to provide the service across the city if the trial is successful,” said the Mayor .

He claimed that the companies will provide 4G connection without any slowdown in the network. However, download options from other websites are likely to be restricted. “For the first few months, we are planning to provide the service at Race Course for free. One can use it for 30 minutes a day. Password will be given so that the devices can be traced,” he said.

If the project materialises, Coimbatore will be the first city in Tamil Nadu to provide 4G internet facility to the public for free. The civic body has allotted Rs 1.5 crore for it.
