VELLORE: The Pernambut Consumer Welfare Protection Society suggested only those students who have studied in government and government-aided schools should be offered admission to medical colleges so that rural areas are medically serviced preventing quacks.
In a memo submitted to the CM Jayalalithaa, society president T Basheeruddin, pointed out that rich students who studied in English medium private schools grabbed most of the seats in the government medical colleges and after completing the course, they settled down in urban areas. This scarcity of qualified doctors was being exploited by quacks. Quacks can be contained only when qualified medicos are diverted towards rural areas.
The state government should make it a pre-requisite for doctors to serve in rural areas for a minimum period of three years. Unless they adhered to this stipulated condition, the state should deny permission for private clinics to set up practices in urban areas, he pointed out.
