Holistic Ostomy Care Healing for Rectal Cancer

PUDUCHERRY:JIPMER on Saturday organised a scientific symposium on Ostomy care as part of the Ostomy Day celebrations. JIPMER established ‘Ostomy Care Services’ in 2013.

JIPMER Director Subhash Chandra Parija, who inaugurated the Ostomy Day celebration said that JIPMER provides stoma bag and other appliances mostly free of cost. JIPMER formed an Ostomy support group for patients and their relatives two months back and is maintaining an Ostomy registry as well. Several patients got the benefit of this specialised clinic which is among the five such dedicated facility in the country, he said. Patients suffering from rectal cancer and other similar conditions may have to undergo colostomy operation in which fecal matter is diverted to the front of the abdominal wall by bringing large bowel outside surgically. These patients are generally psychologically  depressed and needs psychosocial support, he added.

Ostomy clinic is being operated in the surgical gastroenterology OPD. Two Ostomy nurses trained at TATA Memorial Hospital Mumbai are taking care of stoma patients. They give colostomy care,  and a variety of other services including family counselling, Dr Parija said.
