Transport Dept Gets Rs 3 Lakhs as Fine on Deepavali

COIMBATORE:Transport Department officials of Coimbatore zone, comprising Coimbatore, Tirupur and Nilgiris districts,  checked 1,051 omni buses during this Diwali season and collected Rs 2.89 lakh as fine for various offences.

The department officials checked 1,051 omni buses in six days between November 6 and 11, including a maximum of 333 buses on Saturday and 268 buses on Sunday. During this special checking drive aimed at controlling fleecing the public, the transport department issued a check report to 128 vehicles, for various violations, P Muruganandam, Joint Transport Commissioner, Coimbatore Zone, said in a release.

The transport department collected Rs 2,89,800 as compound fine during this six-day drive, with a maximum of Rs 76,300 being collected on Saturday. Apart from this, the officials also proposed a compound fine of Rs 24,000. The department also collected Rs 50,030 as tax on Friday and Saturday and proposed a tax of Rs 57,000 on Saturday.

Further, the officials also detained four omni buses, two each on Friday and Saturday. While three out of the four omni buses were bearing Kerala registration number, the fourth omni bus had Karnataka registration number.
