VELLORE: After 16 years, Otteri Lake, on the outskirts of the Fort City is brimming with water following continuous inflow of rain-water from Naickeneri hills. Officials and residents of the City were hopeful that it would end the present water shortage for the next five years raising ground-water levels. Otteri Lake is one of the main water sources for the residents of Vellore city.
Vellore Corporation officials said that Otteri tank has a water-storage capacity 45,00,000 cubic feet. The local body desilted and cleared 1.5 km of the canal for the water to flow into Otteri Lake to ensure the free flow of water into Otteri.
“It has received surplus water after 16 years which is being discharged through the downstream to Thorapadi tank, which is also about to get filled up. Going by the present scenario, the Corporation will not face water problems for the next five years,” said the Commissioner of Vellore Corporation, Janaki Raveendran.
Once the Thorapadi tank gets filled, the surplus water will reach Saduperi. Presently the water-flow into Palar is being diverted to Saduperi. Other water bodies and tanks in and around the City are also receiving a good water inflow from the rains, she added.
