33 percent quota for women in SI posts in Puducherry

PUDUCHERRY:  Chief Minister V Narayanasamy on Saturday said the government would provide 33 per cent reservation for women in the recruitment for sub-inspector of police.

Speaking at the PCC office here at a function to celebrate the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, he explained that the move was to ensure the welfare of women.

According to sources, based on the Central government’s order to provide 33 per cent reservation for women in the police force, recruitment rules for sub-inspectors were amended in the Union Territory. It would come into effect from the next recruitment. Though the recruitment rules for constables were already amended, not enough women applied to fill the 33 per cent quota.

Narayansamy expressed strong hopes that the Central government would provide additional funds of `800 crore this year. After the budget is presented, promises that were made to the public would be fulfilled in a phased manner, he added.

Stating that the administration was aware of the difficulties faced by the elderly in having to come to the respective banks to avail their monthly pension, he said talks were held with the bank authorities to see what could be done to provide pension  to the elderly at the beneficiary’s doorstep.

Bank employees and Anganwadi staff would work together towards the idea, and the amount of `20 incurred by the bank for each individual, would be reimbursed by the government.

PCC President and PWD Minister A Namasivayam, Revenue Minister MOHF Shajahan and Congress functionaries took part in the function.
