CUDDALORE: A first-year student of BSc Horticulture at Annamalai University committed suicide in the hostel room near Chidambaram on Tuesday, as she could not cope up with the subjects taught in English.
The deceased, Nandhini (18), a resident of T Pudhukuppam near Tindivanam in Villupuram district, was found hanging from the ceiling fan using a dupatta.
According to police, “the incident came to light after hostelmates grew suspicious as the room was locked for a while. They checked through the window and saw her hanging from the fan. Authorities immediately alerted the police and revenue department officials, who rushed to the spot, and recovered the body.”
Students last saw Nandhini at dinner on Monday night. “Her roommate had gone to her native, and Nandhini was staying alone. She left behind a suicide note, in which she mentioned the reason for taking the extreme step.
She had also left some personal messages to her uncle and grandparents,” police added.
“Nandhini often lamented that she was not able to understand the subjects, as the medium of instruction was English. She came from a Tamil medium school,” police said, quoting her classmates’ statement.
Though her friends used to help her in studies, the student got worried as semester examinations drew near. Upset, Nandhini cut her wrist using a blade and later hung herself, police added.
Police informed her relatives, and sent the body to the Government Chidambaram Hospital for post-mortem.
