Tipsy head constable slaps inspector for taking him to task, suspended

Express News Service

CHENNAI: A head constable attached to the Koyambedu police station located amidst the busy bus terminus and the vegetable markets was suspended on Monday after he allegedly slapped the inspector of the station.

Police sources said head constable Rajasekaran was drunk when he reported for duty around 2 pm in the station. When his superior officer, inspector V Sampath, questioned him, Rajasekaran picked a quarrel with the inspector.

“During the heated exchange of words, Rajasekaran slapped the inspector hard at one point,” said a police source. This resulted in almost fisticuffs between the inspector and head constable in the station.

It took a few minutes for the other personnel in the station to intervene and separate the two officials, sources added.

On receiving information about the incident, the Assistant Commissioner of Police (Koyambedu), A Pugalenthi, visited the police station and conducted an enquiry.

Both Sampath and Rajasekaran were treated in the Kilpauk Medical College Hospital (KMCH) and Rajasekaran was also subjected to medical tests to ascertain if he was drunk when reporting for the duty.

Sources in the police station said Rajasekaran had faced suspension earlier too after he was found drunk while on duty.

“We have placed Rajasekaran on suspension and a departmental enquiry has been ordered,” said a senior police officer. However, no FIR has been filed against the constable.

Meanwhile, the railway police have launched a hunt for miscreants who allegedly attacked two men and extorted two smart phones and cash worth `5,500 along the railway track near Perambur on Sunday night.

The duo was said to be in a compromising position behind the bushes along the track when the gang showed up, police sources said.

They attacked the duo and fled with their mobile phones and cash. The injured are being treated at the Government Stanley Hospital, police official said.
