Four in the Soup for Humiliating Dalits

MADURAI: Police have registered a case against four Caste Hindus and arrested two of them for allegedly abusing Dalits in Usilampatti town on Friday.

The accused were identified as E Selvam, E Sangu, P Prabu and D Vasimalai, all hailing from Karukkattanpatti village near Usilampatti. Police have arrested Prabu and Vasimalai.

Police said that S Muthulakshmi (24) of Kaliyamman Kovil Street in Karukkattanpatti village had gone to attend a relative’s marriage in Usilampatti when the incident happened. She was standing with M Muthukumar (25), D Rajavel (32) and C Mariyammal (60), all hailing from Karukkattanpatti, in front of the marriage hall when they saw an ice cream vendor passing by. After buying ice cream, they asked the vendor for a discount. Meanwhile, the four accused allegedly mocked them and verbally abused them using caste name. In the altercation that ensued, they allegedly assaulted  Mariyammal with a plantain that was tied in the marriage hall. Also, they allegedly assaulted the others with bottles.
