Mysterious disease plagues this TN village, 8 dead in one month

TIRUVANNAMALAI: Tandarai village is not yet free from the grip of the mysterious disease as another man, who came all the way from Bengaluru developed stomach pain and started vomiting on Sunday.

He has been admitted to Rajiv Gandhi Government General hospital in Chennai and is said to be out of danger.

Vincent, a native of Bangaluru, came to Tandari village to attend the funeral of his relative Christha (65), who died in a private hospital on October 31.

On Sunday evening, he suddenly started vomiting and complained about stomach ache. Immediately he was rushed to Tiruvannamalai Medical College hospital.

The doctors at the hospital referred him to Rajiv Gandhi Government General hospital in Chennai for further treatment after his pulse rate came down drastically.

As many as eight people Christopher (13), Vinodh Kumar (23), Nelson (6), Krithika Merlin (8),  Munusamy (70),  Amudha (27), Joseph (80) and Christha (65) had died in the village one after the other since October 5.

All of them had complained about stomache ache and had vomited. Except Munusamy and Amudha, all the six were relatives and live in the same area.

V Govindhan, Deputy Director of Health Services, Tiruvannamalai told Express, the test results of food and water samples were out and they did not find anything unusual.

“We are awaiting for the forensic reports and autopsy report of Christha. Then only, the exact cause of deaths could be ascertained,” he added. Besides, two children also were admitted in the hospital after they complained of stomach pain. They also reportedly started vomiting. Very few students are turning up at the Tandarai village panchayat school after the deaths.
