CHENNAI: A 61-year-old retired railway employee has been arrested for sending a letter containing a bomb threat to the Chennai Central station manager. The threat later turned out to be a hoax.

Police gave the name of the arrested as Gangadharan. He is said to have told police that he wrote the letter to fix his elder sister.  The communication contained several phone numbers, which Gangadharan believed would lead police to inquire his sister Thilagavathi.

Significantly, Thilagavathi, 68, had been arrested for a similar bomb threat letter to Arakkonam railway station master in December 2013. She had devised a similar  plan to fix her younger brother and his sons in trouble.

Police said the numbers mentioned in the letter sent by Gangadharan belonged to his relatives. His family is currently fighting  a battle over an ancestral property at Arakkonam before the civil court, Vellore.
The latest threat on Tuesday said Maoists had planned to plant bombs in four trains, including the Nilgiris Express.

Subsequently, a search was carried out by RPF personnel, who also pressed sniffer dogs into service. The threat proved to be a hoax. Gangadharan was remanded to judicial custody by a magistrate.
