MADURAI: In a shocking incident, a 16-year-old victim of sexual assault allegedly committed suicide by hanging on Wednesday.
Police sources said the deceased, hailing from Madurai district, was raped by her brother-in-law Lakshmanan about 18 months back. Lakshmanan is married to the victim’s sister.
“The minor girl did not confide the matter to her parents. However, when her body began to show changes, she was forced to share the terrible secret with the family. They lodged a complaint at the AWPS and a case was registered against Lakshmanan under the POCSO Act. He was arrested and remanded in Madurai Central Prison,” said the sources.
She delivered a girl child about eight months ago through Caesarean section. The family reportedly told the police that the entire experience had left the girl mentally and physically drained. Plagued by the trauma, the girl committed suicide by hanging, the sources said.
