Work on barrage across Kollidam to begin soon

CUDDALORE: Former chief minister Jayalalithaa’s promise of building a barrage across River Kollidam would be fulfilled, Chief Minister Edappadi K Palanisamy assured the farmers of Cuddalore.

“The former chief minister announced that a barrage would be constructed between Adhanur and Kumaramangalam at the cost of Rs 400 crore. We have obtained a detailed report of the project. We will give consent and works will begin soon after the we go through the report,” said Edappadi.

He also promised new check dams across River Pennaiyar near Panruti, River Manimuktharu at Bhoothampur near Vriddhachalam, and River Vellaru at Thittagudi. “Walls, to prevent sea water intrusion, would be built around Uppanaru River at Pichavaram, Kollidam River at Vallampadugai and Vellaru River at Athivaraganallur near Bhuvanagiri. Around 57 villages would be benefited out of this,” said the CM. Palaniswami, who distributed welfare measures worth Rs 212.63 crore, announced a new government college at Kattumannarkoil.

The Rs 260.54 crore worth Kollidam integrated drinking water scheme would cater to the drinking water need of 7.7 lakh people in Cuddalore district. He said that the Cuddalore port would be upgraded for Rs 115 crore this year.

Industries Minister M C Sampath, Cuddalore MP A Arunmozidevan, Chidambaram MP M Chandrakasi, MLAs N Murugumaran, V T Kalaiselvan, Sathya Paneerselvam, K A Pandian and many others participated in the function.
